Frequently Asked Questions
Q) What is the eligibility process?
A) In cases regarding academics- For a student to be eligible for services they must have18 continuous weeks of RTI Tier 2 and 3 (with a minimum of 6 weeks of Tier 3). After the student has been identified, the MDT (multidisciplinary team) will review the students data (classroom assessment, classroom observations, RTI Data, DCAS information). Then the team will determine if the student should be evaluated for Special Ed services under IDEA or a 504 Plan. If the student qualifies, the Special Ed teacher will send home a PTE (permission to evaluate). Once that is received back, it is stamped and the school has 45 school days from that point to complete the evaluation and hold a meeting with the parents and MDT and forward the paperwork to our psychology services, to review. After the student is evaluated, we will schedule a meeting with the parents, psychologist and MDT to review the data and determine the best interventions. If the student is eligible for an IEP (Individualized Educational Plan, we will create an IEP based on the student’s academic needs and hold a meeting at a later date.
If the student is eligible for a 504 Plan, we will determine the appropriate classroom accommodations based on the student’s needs. The IEP is renewed annually and the 504 Plan is good up to 3 years as long as nothing changes.
Q) What if my child does not meet the IDEA criteria? (18 continuous weeks of RTI Tier 2 and 3 (with a minimum of 6 weeks of Tier 3)
A) The request will be forwarded to the dean of curriculum to meet with the teacher and parent to come up with an action plan. The student’s progress will be monitored periodically.
